Ayurvedic Rejuvenative Therapies (Panchakarma)

Modern lifestyles lead to poor health in many ways. However, the use of simple and natural methods can significantly improve health and vitality. Rejuvenative therapy is a unique feature of Ayurveda involving the complete cleansing of body, eliminating toxins and balancing aggravated doshas which cause blockages in the energy channels within the individual.

Rejuvenative therapy is not only meant for elimination of disease-causing toxins but also to replenish the tissues with nourishment. Rejuvenate literally means 'to make young again'.

In Ayurveda, rejuvenating therapy is the golden way to attain longevity, as it is aimed at the preservation of health. Ayurveda says that "rasayana" or rejuvenating therapy optimises the circulation of nutrients to both body and mind.

To achieve the maximum benefits from the therapy, it is advisable to follow an Ayurvedic lifestyle. An Ayurvedic physician can help you identify appropriate foods, exercise, yoga and herbal preparations, as per your personal constitution, to optimise the benefits.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is one of the great purification and rejuvenating therapies. In the Sanskrit language, Shirodhara is composed of two words: "shiro" +"dhara", shiro means head and dhara means flow. In Ayurveda, a continuous flow of warm, herbal oil on the forehead is known as Shirodhara.

It's a very simple and relaxing therapy, where warm, herbal oil is poured on the forehead of the individual to stimulate the "third eye". The oil is chosen according to the personal constitution of the individual. Milk, yogurt or ghee (clarified butter) is sometimes used instead of oil, depending on the needs of the individual. It's a divine and relaxing method - a great rejuvenating therapy that gives a healthy glow and radiance to the skin.

With regular sessions, you will find relief from stress and strain in daily life. The total sense of well being that is experienced afterward helps the individual not only at a physical level, but results in improved relationships and social interaction. The individual is also better able to face the challenges in life.

25 minute Ayurvedic Head and Body Massage, followed by oil pouring on the forehead for 25 minutes, finishing off with a 10 minute of Head Massage. Total duration is 1 hour.

Abhyanga
This is a gentle but firm whole body massage from head to toe using warm medicated oil. Oils are chosen mainly according to the prakruti (psychosomatic constitution) of the individual.

The following factors are considered before the oil treatment is given :

Age
Sex
Time of day
Season
Lunar cycle
Solar cycle

The massage is done in a soft rhythmic way with one or two persons massaging at the same time for forty five to sixty minutes. Abhyanga massage is a deeply relaxing, rejuvenating experience as well as treatment for certain illnesses.

The most important and interesting aspect of this technique is using the fingers on various parts of the body. According to Ayurveda, our fingers represent the five universal elements i.e.

• The Thumbs represent Fire.
• The Index fingers represent Air.
• The Middle fingers represent Space.
• The Ring fingers represent Earth.
• The Little fingers represent Water.

Therefore, using the fingers for massage has the effect of strengthening the corresponding elements within the body.

Process:

20 minute Ayurvedic Head and Face Massage, followed by full body massage with herbal oil for 40 minutes. Total duration is 1 hour.

(15 minutes after the massage, a steam bath or warm shower is highly recommended).

Benefits:

• A regular Abhyanga therapy protects from stress, anxiety, exhaustion and Vata (Air) disorder.
• Abhyanga is the best way to control and balance Vata in the body. Vata is the predominant entity in the sense of touch and skin is the organ of touch.
