Ashwagandha (winter cherry)

Known as “Indian Ginseng”, the herb Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera/Winter Cherry) is hailed as the national herb of India, due to its wide usage in various Indian traditional medicines.

For couples who are trying to start a family, the herb Ashwagandha is extremely helpful.  If Ashwagandha powder is taken with milk for at least 42 days prior to trying to conceive, it can increase the chances of conception.

Ashwagandha can be taken in the following manner :

  • Mix 10 gm of Ashwagandha powder into 500 ml of fresh cow’s milk (preferably organic milk).  Boil the milk on a medium flame for about 8 – 10 minutes, while stirring the milk regularly, adding a little rock sugar to it.
  • Both the man & woman should drink a glass of this milk, preferably twice a day, morning and evening, or at least at night, 30 minutes before going to bed.

In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is called “Shukral”, which means “that which can increase the quantity and improve the quality of the “Shukra dhatu” (reproductive tissue) in the human body. Therefore this herb can help to correct infertility problems and its related symptoms, such as insufficient quantity of the vital fluid, low libido, frigidity in women, erectile dysfunction in men, etc.

Unlike other stimulating substances, Ashwagandha does not have any adverse effects on one’s heart and nervous system.  On the contrary, it works as a tonic for the heart and the nervous system.
